SOUTHERN TRAIL
Mythical Mountains, Remote Beaches, & the Wild South
Chania → Vrysses → Askifou → Sfakia Beach → Return via Askifou
Duration: ~8-9 hours
a journey into Crete’s wild soul
a path carved through ancient villages, mountain passes, and quiet coastal beauty.
Begin with a visit to the peaceful village of Fre, home of the legendary church of Panagia of the Two Rocks. Continue through Vrysses, known for its cool springs and handmade yogurt, then ascend into the Askifou Plateau for fresh juice, tea, or a coffee under the Cretan sky.
From there, descend toward the southern coast to reach Sfakia, where mountains drop dramatically into the Libyan Sea. Enjoy time on the beach or walk the small harbor before returning through Askifou for a hearty Cretan lunch in the heart of the mountains.
This trail is raw, mythical, and deeply moving — ideal for those who crave authenticity and depth in their travels.
